Here's my second or third blog.. i can't really remember coz there r so many already.. I hope i can upgrade my IT skills more in the future so I could learn how to develop and manipulate them for my own purpose and of course, for teaching the future leaders later on. For those who are willing to lend a hand to teach me like how to use moogle and so forth, I would be more than grateful.. =)

Since I came to UM, I had nothing but finding myself in trouble with all the assignments and new learning environment.. it's been hectic but at the same time interesting though.. I guess it's time for me to turn over a new leaf and begin to diminish my old lazy self. I hope I can find ways to coop with these new challenges and atmosphere soo.. otherwise i might end up regretting..

Reflection...~

QUESTIONS:

How technology is going to affect how your students are going to be learning?

Cognitive growth characteristics have differences between young learners and adults. The attention span of young learners in the early years of schooling is short, as little as 10 to 15 minutes: they are easily diverted and distracted by other pupils (Mckay, 2006). They might even drop out of a task when they feel it difficult and too challenging, though on the other hand they are on a regular basis, often willing to try a task in rhe effort of pleasing the teacher. Such characteristics pose a great challenge for teachers to come up with the most suitable approach in catering each pupils learning needs and interest. Recently, a newly found technology called the SMART Board is said to be up for the challenge. If utilized wisely, for example integrating visual aids (video clips, animations) music and special effects using a combination of latest softwares, there are high possibilities that pupils might get interested with the learning process, thus shifting their attention towards gaining knowledge. This is crucial as according to Penny Mckay 2006, language teachers need to know of the developmental characteristics of children, for example their curiosity and sense of wonder. For example, if the a teacher’s task is to teach his pupils on how to do a ‘Zapin’ (traditional Malay dance). Aside from simply playing a ‘Zapin dance’ cassette, the teacher can just download from the internet a video clip of the complete version of the dance and upload it into the SMART Board which will be displayed to pupils later on. Pupils can benefit more through this method as they are learning the dance movement not just by playing the music, but more importantly by visually seeing the actual dances demonstrated by real dances in the video clip. Even if the teacher do not know how to dance themselves, simply with a few clicks of a mouse buttons, a diverse information about the dance appears in an instant. Therefore, having such technology around proofs to be resourceful and less time consuming for both teachers and pupils. As an added bonus, the use of new technology like the SMART Board can help reduce disciplinary problems since it helps to make learning fun and enjoyable.
The availability of technologies nowadays is stirring up new ways on how pupils can acquire the latest information in the world. The introduction of WiMax in Kuala Lumpur is one of those gateways for pupils to gain access to the internet with ease aside from going to specific places like the cybercafé to get connected. Since there is also a growing concern about the possibility of children misusing the internet like browsing pornographic websites and so on, the need for teachers to step in and give appropriate guidance to their pupils is becoming ever important. In constructivist education, children’s learning skills are promoted; children are encouraged to become active learners, becoming aware of their own needs, their own strengths and weaknesses and taking some responsibility for their own learning (Mckay 2006). By delivering the right support and assistance, pupils can be guided to search the necessary information and browsing the right websites like EazyMaths and Science-on-line, thus transforming them into info-gathering individuals which also means less dependence on adult and gaining a stronger self-confidence on their own ability to self-progress.

How you as a teacher will be learning?

As one of the educator-to-be of this modern and challenging era, it is crucial for me to seek various ways and opportunities to access knowledge and information for my own self need and progress. As a student of University Melaya, my way of learning is undoubtedly through attending formal classes, receiving daily informative lectures, and if the time permits I may make an appointment with my respective lecturers after class hours to gain further comprehension. Usually, due to limited time and opportunity, I will attempt to log in to the internet and deliver my questions and doubts on-line which in return is easier and more accessible. I find that the internet (G-Mail, Yahoo-Mail, Blogspot,) is also a great way of sending, receiving and sharing our opinions with people across the world, thus helping me to make critical judgements of an issue with their assistance. In addition, since I will be educating future leaders, I find it is a must to browse through the teacher’s website like Onestop English, Cambridge, Prentise Hall, for the latest teaching methods, teaching gadgets and utilities, and sometimes read about their valuable teaching experience especially about classroom management (which is a nightmare for all new teachers) and anger management (which I find it as a must because children disciplinary problem has worsen over the years and in news too!). All of these are important to me as they do not just provide the necessary information for me for building a strong foundation as a future teacher, but also as a way of gaining wisdom, maturity of thought and understand the good thing about being a teacher as to me; educating the leaders of tomorrow is a noble and respectable occupation.
